My wonderful and committed friend Nadia Plesner (unofficial queen of welfare in Dafur), is currently working on a fantastic idea; “Drafting for humanitarian service”. As an alternative to drafting for military service one would be called upon, to serve humanitarian needs including medical aid, teaching and overall development of infrastructure and living conditions in zones struck by war or catastrophe. We cannot exist peacefully without the military to keep order and guard the peace, but I think it is crucial for the majority of us who are ignorant in these matters, to see the effects of war and Mother Nature’s cruelty first hand. One could argue that the effects of such service, would calm and reason with the violent behavior in all of us, and contribute to the conditions of everyone everywhere. You go Nadia!
