I am a bit frustrated to say the least, and certainly puzzled concerning the apparent lack of interest, in changing the overall business fundamentals for the better good. I cannot quite fathom why we are still so heavily struggling with mentalities that every bright-minded company in the world, has been trying to retire for more than a decade. It truly does not require a lot of effort to push these ideas in the right direction, and the output is unfathomable in our own favor.
- Admit your mistakes and faults, every time – It suits no one and it produces no productivity whatsoever, to blame others. Be proud that you are confident enough and capable of saying; “Sorry guys, that’s my fault”.
- Honor your commitments – Make sure that you do what you said you would do. Be on time if you said you would be. Deliver on time if possible, and communicate delay in advance if not.
- Communicate – If people around you fail to comprehend what you are trying to accomplish, you will likely not produce the expected outcome, you will miss out on valuable input from others and you are running the risk of working on something no longer required or inadequate in goal perspective.
- Be thorough – Do whatever it takes to make sure you only have to do it once. Make sure you know what is expected of you and then go do just that. Use peer-review to ensure that you are heading in the right direction and do not be afraid to ask questions like; “How would you go about this?”
- Compliment people around you – By acknowledging that your co-worker did something well or has excelled his or her performance, you are not only boosting their confidence and work morale but also their desire to try even harder. I am well aware that my very best days are when I am happy at work. Be sure that these gestures reach superiors, as well as peers and subordinate co-workers; you will be surprised to see how this also affect people above you.
- Smile often, even if there is nothing specific to smile about – There is simply nothing more uplifting and reassuring, than at person with the capacity to smile at hard times or stressful situations. I addition; having the capacity to smile, boosts the energy of any environment.
- Suppress negativity – No one finds it easy to boost the morale of a naysayer. We cannot always work wonders, but we achieve so much more as a team if we believe that we can. If we do not at least try, if we always approach obstacles with a pessimistic attitude or if we conclusively say no before assessing the consequences of turning something down, we will never sense what we are truly capable of achieving.
I recently read a profound phrase that really boosted my enthusiasm about doing more, also in relation to the bullets above. The origin of the phrase is unknown, but it read:
“Someone once told me the definition of Hell: The last day you have on earth, the person you became will meet the person you could have become.”
That really stung, you know. With your dying breath realizing the opportunity resting within you all along. So how about we change it up a bit? Your professional life is simply too big a slice, to be anything by fulfilling 🙂 :-).
