Bye bye Facebook

I am seriously considering bailing on Facebook, after 7 years of faithful delusional service, thinking Facebook were the new black. Facebook is the same, even improved perhaps (black with a hint of purple), but the people on it aren’t – my friends are not. They have turned into self-righteous ego-hounds, whos only goal is to spoil my bus ride.

Do you know what I use Facebook for? Every morning I walk out of my front door, plug in the earbuds, select a familiar tune and spend the next 30 minutes curiously reading about my friend’s latest endeavours – Lately though, not so much. I now spend 30 minutes reading about their new tan, the pretty photos someone took of them, the prize they just won, them blabbering about their new-born – the cutest child who ever lived, the new job they got, the new kitchen they bought etc. etc.

What the fuck? Getting attention from your family, friends and loved ones the old fashion way (naturally!) isn’t enough anymore, you have to rape the Internet for attention too?! Come on you self-devouring hypocrite; it might feel like you’re flying sky high, but look – no chute!

In my opinion Facebook is a media where one can share fun, serious, informative or enlightening trivia, with friends. Share a joke, write something amusing, tell me about your recently lost boyfriend, the problems you have in math class or the cool car you just saw, or say something decent about someone else or something great they did. Don’t tell me about the fantastic grades you got, how long you just ran, how much money you have currently have or whatever car you just bought.

To me being unable to resist the urge to unload all that egocentric bullshit on your friend list signifies a neglected, unchallenged and complacent ego, in dire need of a wakeup call.

I’m left with two options:

1. Systematically delete friends belonging to the “look-at-me” group (rapidly closing in on 60%), and tell them to go fuck themselves when (and if) they notice the lost connection.
2. Shutdown my Facebook account and venture on.
3. Create a new Facebook with emphasis on “you” and not “me”.

What will it be…
